With a small army of kids in the house, we love Halloween! It’s always fun to get everyone dressed up and then parade around the neighborhood trick-or-treating. Now that we’re halfway through October, the kids are talking nonstop about what they want to be for Halloween. All of the discussion about costumes recently had us thinking about homes, specifically how we often try to dress up the inside of a house to make it look more appealing in the staging process.
When your house looks great on the inside, you can subtly increase its value to prospective buyers. As we move closer to a new year, the trends in interior home decor are going to change.
Style for Value in 2020
Here’s what you should consider in your house before putting your home on the market:
1. Use natural dividers to create intimacy. Open concepts are still popular, but they don’t offer much privacy transitioning from one area to another. Folks are beginning to put small natural material divisions between different areas in open concepts. Consider using an indoor planter or a wooden room divider to separate different areas of a single room.
2. Incorporate 2020’s favorite colors. Some of the most popular colors for 2020 will be:
Gray. Gray has been a popular paint choice for a number of years, and it’ll stay at the forefront in 2020. It’s neutral, goes well with many color combinations, and works with carpets and furniture.
Pink. Available in a number of shades, pink offers a soft, elegant touch. It’s perfect on walls or furniture if you want a quiet, light-hearted room.
Purple. Purple offers a huge burst of color, making it great for furniture, decorations, and even walls. Don’t be afraid to experiment with lighter and darker shades.
Blues. All shades of blue will be popular in 2020, but cobalt blue will be the stand out. Feel free to try it on your walls, and consider using it on your furniture.
Dark green. Expect dark green’s prominence to show up in upholstery and furniture accents. Avoid using it on your walls.
3. Wallpaper is back—but with rules. Decades ago, our parents covered every inch of the walls with wallpaper. Wallpaper is cool again, but there are two rules to follow:
Wallpaper should be used for a splash of pattern and color on an accent wall for an artistic touch. Avoid the temptation to cover all four walls of a single room in the same paper.
Opt for natural patterns and textures. Bamboo shoots, splotches of color that look like flowers—anything that looks like it could show up in nature will do well in wallpaper for 2020.
4. Dark wood is in. The last few years have given preference to light wood. The tides are turning back to the ‘70s, when dark wood panelling was the rage. While you should avoid the panelling, the dark shades are back. Try it out in flooring, furniture, and walls.
5. Natural fibers are still cool. Wicker, jute, rattan, bamboo—these light fibers are still great options for furniture, decorations, and even panels. A good rule of thumb for 2020 home styles: If it looks natural, it’ll probably do well in your home.
6. Use souvenirs and colorful artwork in your decoration. It’s time to let that statue you purchased on vacation a few years ago shine! Show it off on your coffee table. 2020 is all about culture, so display anything you have from other countries. It’s the same with artwork—proudly display your paintings and pottery all over your home.
