A Fun (And Safe) Night Out in Pittsburgh During COVID-19

Julie and Ted Enjoying the Evening

With the rollercoaster of restrictions that came when the coronavirus first hit, our front porch became our new favorite summertime escape. It was the perfect place to meet our new neighbors, say hello to passersby, and catch up with old friends over a socially distanced drink.

While it was enough of a challenge to find new ways to have fun over the summer, the winter has challenged us to be more creative than ever before! One of the most fun COVID-safe dates we had was an organized scavenger hunt throughout the city. Inspired by this, we decided to create a scavenger hunt of our own that you can try too. Check out some of your favorite places around the ‘burgh, and hopefully discover something new! You can print or screenshot the BINGO board below, and let the adventure begin!

To encourage you to explore the city, we’re adding some incentive from now through Valentine’s Day, with a chance to win a gift card to a local restaurant or coffee shop. If you’ve discovered this post after Valentine’s Day, don’t worry! It is designed to have fun year round.

Places for Fun in Pittsburgh

Looking for some more ideas? Here are a few safe activities you and your friends can try as you plan for a fun night in Pittsburgh:

1. Get a view of the city. Pittsburgh has plenty of great spots to take in the city lights. While Mount Washington may be famous for being one of the best vistas in the country, you have many other options—most of which provide a few more options for additional fun. Example: The Three Rivers Heritage Trail offers some of the best up-close views of the stadiums, the boats on the water, and some of the most picturesque backgrounds for date night selfies!

2. Take a stroll through the parks. Frick Park, Schenley Park, Highland Park, and many others throughout Pittsburgh provide plenty of paths through the woods suitable for a variety of fitness levels. The added foliage and tree cover means you’ll also get an extra reprieve from the hot July sun. Just be sure to check the park rules on when you should leave—many ask for you to be out by sundown!

3. Get out onto the water! Pittsburgh’s three rivers offer plenty of places for boats to roam free. You can often spot people having fun on tubes or skis pulled along the rivers. If you don’t have access to a boat, try a kayak or canoe! There are plenty of low-traffic areas you can enjoy. Just don’t forget your lifejacket, sunscreen, and extra water!

4. Take your favorite takeout to the park. Restaurants are struggling with constant changes in regulations, but many still offer to-go drinks and food! Stop by your favorite restaurant and grab some of your go-to dishes before heading the park with a blanket to spread out and enjoy your food. While you’re there, you may even consider playing your favorite board game or a game of cards.

5. Get fancy with a trip to the grocery store. If you want a fine dining experience without visiting a restaurant, head to your local grocery store and pick out a few high-quality items. Select ingredients for a gourmet charcuterie board, pick out a cut of meat you’ve never tried before, or sample something completely exotic. Looking for a fun splash to enjoy with your meal? We love the local selection at Independent Brewing Co in Squirrel Hill!

The coronavirus may have you staying close to home whenever possible, but you still have options for fun. With a little planning and creativity, you can enjoy an exciting night out of the house with friends and family!

Cheers,

Julie & Ted
