Just a couple months after Ted and I moved from Greenfield to New Jersey in 2014, a cute local coffee shop settled into the old Greenfield General Store a couple hundred feet away from our first house, with fresh flowers in the window boxes and a welcoming “Staghorn” sign. We were disappointed to have missed it, but it's become a favorite spot to work, chat, and relax since we moved back. I recently stopped in for a cup of coffee and delicious slice of veggie quiche and had a few minutes to catch up with the shop’s owner, Kate Morris.
StaghornGarden Cafe was opened by Kate & Mark Morris in 2014. Kate & Mark met in grad school studying architecture and design. They are well traveled and have lived in several cities, but fell in love with Pittsburgh for its great parks and arts culture. Kate & Mark landed in Greenfield in 2012 because of its accessibility to the rest of Pittsburgh and great house prices.
Opening a coffee shop has been a lifelong dream for Kate, and as she regularly passed the old Greenfield General Store, she imagined opening her own shop there. She watched the previous coffee shop come and go, and when it closed she and Mark made the leap to open their own. Kate & Mark are each other’s greatest encouragers, and owning a business together has been an adventure that strengthened them as a family and a team.
Kate describes Staghorn Cafe as a “contemporary general store,” with coffee, handmade and local gifts, and a kitchen. It is a true community gathering place, where people come as strangers and leave as neighbors. When you come in, you’re invited to stay awhile— whether you’re browsing their selection of handmade crafts sourced from local artists, relaxing while reading the daily paper or books from their library, or catching up with a friend while your kids play with the toys and play kitchen in the corner as you enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee and locally grown snack. Staghorn cafe’s focuses its menu on local, organic, healthy treats, sourcing all its dairy from grass-fed cows at local dairy farms.
It’s not only the curated selection of art and goodies that makes Staghorn unique, but the staff at the cafe as well. Kate encourages her employees to grow their own passions. Try a pastry from Art Institute students, or check out some of the beautiful pictures from around the ‘burgh that Molly snapped with her passion for photography.
Not sure when to stop by? Staghorn cafe is open daily, or you can join their monthly poetry series to meet new friends and get a taste of the neighborhood. You will likely find Ted or myself stationed at one of the eclectic yet cozy tables, and we would love for you to say hi!
Cheers,
Julie & Ted
