3,2,1....blast off to out-of-this world fun, without leaving town!
The last few weeks of February are arguable the toughest time of the year in Pittsburgh. This time of year we 'burghers crave sunshine, warm air, and signs that Spring is coming soon. The only thing worse than opening your weather app to check the 10 day forecast to see a mix of rain, snow, and clouds.... again.... is accidentally swiping right to the weather in Houston to see straight sunshine and high's in the 60's.
As much as we would love to escape, and are happy for those that are able, the reality is that especially when you're going through a big life change (like a move!), it often makes more sense to stay put. When you need a little lift to get you through until the tulips start blooming, here are some wallet-friendly pick me ups to help you enjoy a staycation:
Did you fall for the cute swimsuit display featured at Target and need somewhere to make a splash? Check out an indoor water park or pool-- just 20 minutes south of the city the Upper Saint Clair rec center has a great indoor pool and lazy river with a hot tub for grownups, and kid-friendly slides. At less than $20/person, it makes a great day-trip for families.
For warm tropical air and real botanicals to make you feel like you're in a jungle, stop into Phipps or the National Aviary. Both offer warm places to walk around, and help you feel lost in nature.
Carnegie Science Center: really any of the Carnegie museums offer interesting escapes to immerse yourself in art, science, and culture, but our favorite is the Science Center because it's great for all ages and allows you to be the most active. You can spend a full day taking in the water displays, train table, and observatory & laser shows in the main museum, and if you haven't worn yourself (or your kids!) out yet, you can stop into Sports Works for a giant ropes course/playground that is sure to delight time and time again.
Hidden Harbor: This little cove is like a tucked-away resort, with top notch tropical drinks that will make you forget you're sitting right off of Shady Ave, and whisk you off to somewhere warm and sunny.
