A Brief History of Ross Township

Named after prominent Pittsburgh attorney and United States Senator James Ross, Ross Township was originally formed in late 1809. While Ross Township is best known today for its prominent shopping locations along the ever-busy McKnight Road, it’s also notable for a few culturally significant moments in local and national history, including:

  • An infamous 1902 jailbreak, during which two escaped prisoners took shelter in Ross Township’s Perrysville School. 

  • The 1967 invention of the McDonald’s Big Mac, a popular sandwich created by Jim Delligatti at his McDonald’s store on McKnight Road. 

With Route 279 cutting through southwestern Ross Township and McKnight Road and Route 19 running north and south, Ross Township is a popular through point for people traveling through Pittsburgh’s North Hills.

For homeowners, Ross Township provides plenty of highways, convenient access to shops and malls, lots of wooded recreation areas, and lovely homes in the celebrated North Hills School District.

Bus Line: 2 Mount Royal: This bus line cuts through Millvale and Etna before traveling up Mount Royal Boulevard and heading to Ross Park Mall and North Hills Village Mall.

Bus Line: 12 McKnight: The 12 McKnight travels through Pittsburgh’s North Side, then follows McKnight Road all the way into McCandless and the Pine Creek Shopping Center.
