History of Point Breeze
Named after an old tavern that once sat at the intersection of Greensburg Pike and Fourth Street Road (Penn Avenue and Fifth Avenue today), Point Breeze was once a popular home base for powerful businessmen like the Mellons, Hillmans, and Fricks. In fact, Clayton, the former home of business magnate Henry Clay Frick, still stands as an homage to American Industrialism in the heart of Point Breeze.
Today, you’ll find the largely residential neighborhood adorned in beautiful, diverse architecture and plenty of trees. While the neighborhood is marked by its tree-lined roads, it’s also noted for its plentiful parks and open spaces. In fact, these child-friendly details have been immortalized in multiple memoirs. Author John Edgar Wideman wrote two memoirs that take place in part in Westinghouse Park. Annie Dillard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning An American Childhood was mainly set at Park Place Elementary.
Technically split into North Point Breeze and South Point Breeze, the collective neighborhood is bordered by Larimer and Homewood to the north, Wilkinsburg to the east, Regent Square to the south, and Squirrel Hill and Shadyside to the west.
