A Brief History of Bellevue

Bellevue can trace its roots all the way back to Revolutionary War, when it was originally intended as “depreciation land”—land that was gifted to Revolutionary War veterans before their monetary wages depreciated in value so quickly. 

But that didn’t happen. Instead, portions of Bellevue were gradually bought up and partitioned until it became the neighborhood we know today!

Historically a dry town all the way through Prohibition and even into the 21st century, Bellevue didn’t loosen its control over alcohol until 2015, when restaurants could begin selling beer, wine, and spirits with fewer restrictions. 

With more than 1,000 buildings that are 100+ years old, Bellevue is proud of its heritage and storied past, and many of its buildings are marked with historical placards. 

Bellevue is located along the Ohio River northwest of Downtown Pittsburgh. It’s bordered by Avalon in the northwest, Ross Township to the north and east, and Brighton Heights in the southeast.

Bellevue’s Access to Highways and Other Major Roadways

Because Bellevue is bordered by the Ohio River to the west and Pittsburgh’s hilly terrain to the east, it can feel challenging traveling to and from Bellevue. 

Fortunately, there are some highways nearby. Here’s how to reach them:

  • Route 65: From anywhere in Bellevue, head west until you reach Route 65. It runs the entire length of Bellevue. 

  • Route 279: From Lincoln Avenue, turn north onto North Home Avenue and continue onto Union Avenue. Follow until you reach 279.
